Renovating a Kitchen with Elise Connor, CKD – In Progress

Posted on Oct 8, 2014 10:50:50 AM

Often, renovation is stressful because all that you do in the kitchen as a family is now in a chaotic state – eating, cooking and socializing.  Elise and her team did everything they could to make the transition.  The customer, Marlene, got involved in a creative way – she wrote about it while the process was happening!  Her opinions are really the only ones that matter, so we’ll let them speak for us:

Renovating a Kitchen with Elise Connor, CKD - Planning

Posted on Oct 6, 2014 1:03:00 PM

Sometimes a customer just wants a bit of an update.  Marlene and Steve wanted to reface their cabinets and replace the countertops.  They had built the home in the 1980s.  What designer Elise Connor, CKD saw were some major problems with an over-sized island that blocked the use of many of the cabinets and a pass-through over the sink that did nothing to open the space to family and guests.  In addition, there was almost no prep space - a real drawback for entertaining the quilting club the customer loves!

European Kitchens Seminar

Posted on Oct 1, 2014 1:08:00 PM

This week S&W KItchens hosted a CEU seminar on European Kitchens, presented by Alison Weidner from Poggenpohl.  It was a wonderful look at how kitchens developed in Europe and how those developments are reflected today in the US and in Europe.

In 1926, Margarete Shutte-Lihotsky designed an efficient, low cost kitchen.  It is referred to as the 'Frankfurt Kitchen' and is considered the first modern fitted kitchen.  Kitchens before this tended to have whatever furniture the homeowner could find or was passed down to them:  a large prep and eating table, a cupboard or armoire for dishes, perhaps a deep tub for washing dishes or food.  Probably, the adoption of reliable indoor plumbing and electricity helped to make a fitted kitchen more practical.

The Tale of Two Kitchens… the Hunt

Designer Chris Druschel

We continue the The Tale of Two Kitchens with the chapter on finding just the right finishes - a daunting task!

With the wonderful floor plan agreed upon it seemed like the renovation could move forward quickly.  However, the clients had very specific ideas about the finishes they wanted.  They liked white, but not stark white, for the cabinets and they wanted soapstone counters, but they had to be black.

The Tale of Two Kitchens… in one house

Posted on Sep 15, 2014 1:12:00 PM

Designer Chris Druschel

It was the best of homes for them; it was the worst of kitchens.  Ok, not the worst, but these clients really wanted a space that met their family and entertaining needs… which turned out to be two kitchens:  a social kitchen - where family and friends end up spending time and a functional prep kitchen, smaller but where everything is within easy reach for the primary cook.
