Houzz 2013 Fall Kitchen Trends Study

20121227163120!Houzz logo

Houzz has quickly become the design industry's replacement for home magazines in a digital age.  It lets you can flip through all kinds of photos, just like in a magazine - and so much more!  You can narrow the pictures to see only kitchens, or only baths, or only traditional homes.  You can tag pictures of things you like and make notes on them.  (In the 20th century these are called tear-sheets - pages you ripped from magazines to save for later - I still have a stack of these somewhere...)  And you can share what you like and don't like with your spouse, best friend or designer - all without encountering ads for Viagra or pet food.

Predictions for Your Kitchen from Walter Cronkite

Everything today seems to be going retro - home and clothing designs have been mimicing the 1950s, 60s and 70s for about a decade already!  But back in the day (not that I would remember those days), the future was all the rage.  Everyone from Walt Disney to Stanley Kubrick tried to predict what our lives would be like and how our work and homes would adapt to the many technology advances taking place.

Popularity of the White Kitchen - by Krista Agapito

A white kitchen is a clean, cheerful and timeless space that provides a feeling of warmth and comfort. White kitchens are lighter, simpler, and can be traditional and modern at the same time.  It is no wonder that white continues to be the most popular among painted cabinetry recently specified by 59% of NKBA member kitchen designers, while other colors were specified by only 38% of designers according to the 2012 Kitchen & Bath Style Report.

Kitchen and Bath Industry Show

We recently attended the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas and we thought we'd share our impressions of where we're all headed.  Overall, the show was smaller than previous years and many booths were smaller as well.  Of course, this pretty clearly reflects the economy and the need for manufacturers to scale back on costs.  There were, however, signs of better things to come as many vendors showed innovative products designed to help our customers save time and effort and maximize storage.

Dark [Shadows] Kitchens

Kitchen design definitely has trends – not as crazy or fast-moving as fashion, but definite styles that mark a decade when you see them.  Remember the avocado kitchens in the ‘70s?  Almond Formica countertops in the ‘90s?  One of the quirkiest design styles in the current market is steampunk.  Possibly a backlash against all the mid-century modern/retro that’s been everywhere for awhile.  As the blog The Steampunk Home describes it, steampunk “combines the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.”
